Great War in the Villages

Dene Valley U3A members set up a Group in the summer of 2012 to research and collate information about the people named on the village war memorials. We have extended our research to look not only at those people who had died but also those who served in the forces and came home. We have also looked at village life during the war years.

2014 is the centenary of the start of The Great War and we hope our project will provide a celebration of their lives and commemorate their sacrifice.

Those in the group agreed which villages we should research and recognised our resources would mean we could not cover all the villages where our U3A has members.

We have organised our site to allow us to add information which comes from our research and from the kindness of people in our villages. To discover what we have found you can visit:
  • Pages dedicated to each village:
In addition to the research we as a U3A group have carried out about people from our villages other local groups have been researching those on neighbouring village memorials. We provide a link below to the work carried out by Ann Such of the Lighthorne History Society on the names on the Lighthorne Memorial
